Equity in Computer Science Education - Where are we and what can you do?
What does equity look like in computer science education? How does this differ from equality and access? The presenters will discuss why computer science is such an essential literacy and skillset that our students need in today's world, talk about where we currently are in the process of closing existing equity gaps in computer science education and discuss what you can do in your district or in your sphere of influence to achieve your equity goals.
Format: Brief introduction/presentation by each of the panelists (3 minutes each); panel discussion on session questions (40 minutes); open Q&A (about 15 minutes); and closing statements/challenges (about 2-3 minutes each).
Presenters/Panelists: (1) Clark Merkley, Executive Director of BootUp Professional Development, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization focused on bringing coding and computer science to ALL elementary students around the country by empowering their teachers; (2)Lien Diaz, Founding Director of the Constellations Center for Equity in Computing at Georgia Tech University, and a leading advocate for equity in computer science education; (3) LeoLin Bowen, Outreach Regional Manager at Code.org, a passionate voice promoting equity in the computer science education landscape; and (4) Ashley Gramby, Director of Marketing for Girls Who Code, dedicated to closing the gender gap in technology and changing the image of what a computer programmer looks like.
