Safety Tips for Space Heaters

Requirements for the selection of a safe Space Heater are as follows;

  1. Ceramic type devices.
  2. Individual built-in thermostats.
  3. Automatically shut-off if the airflow becomes blocked.
  4. Safety shut off if the heater is tipped over.
  5. Listed by an approved testing laboratory, like UL Listed

Safe usage and placement of a space heater;

  • Plug space heater directly into a wall receptacle without the use of an extension cord.
  • Maintain a minimum of 3 feet (on all sides) away from combustible materials (Examples: furniture, paper, boxes, and trash cans, clothes and any fabric covered items).
  • Maintain airflow behind and around the unit.
  • Remember to shut of the space heater before leaving the office just in case your return is delayed.
  • Stay warm. :)

Have your space heater inspected by the Fire Safety Office. Email or call us for an appointment or to setup a building/group inspection. The Fire Safety Office will be providing on-site space heater inspections on a building-by-building basis.
