The College of Architecture, Georgia Institute of Technology, in cooperation with the Consulate General of France in Atlanta, and with the support of the European Union Center of Excellence at Georgia Tech, Atlanta BeltLine Inc. and Perkins + Will, hosts a symposium and exhibition on Le Grand Paris and the Atlanta BeltLine -- two potentially transformative projects that promise to change the way the two cities are conceived, perceived, and lived.

The symposium brings together French and American politicians, academics, professionals, and community members for a careful look at both the projects and the issues they raise -- for the design, planning, and governance of cities; for the professions usually associated with these tasks; and for the current and future inhabitants of the two cities.
Each exemplifies the tension between grand plans and everyday life, between regional, local, and infrastructural scales, between territorial strategies and site-specific projects, between democratic desire and technocratic impulse, between political vision and the collective imagination.
Given their extended time frames and diverse constituencies, the symposium offers an opportune moment to parse the multiple discourses -- professional, political, civic -- that inform them in the hope of both illuminating, and contributing to, the processes that will determine their ultimate configurations.
