There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

This Daily Mail story starts with a new study showing the oldest Arctic Ocean ice losing 95 percent of its mass to global warming over the last 35 years. But scroll halfway down the story, and you'll find a sidebar commemorating the 30th anniversary of one of the first public warnings about climate change. James Hansen, then NASA's top climate scientist, testified in Congress in 1988 that global warming wasn't on the horizon — it had already arrived. The story lists evidence proving that Hansen and others were right about their predictions, but the speed of the changes worldwide has still surprised many climate scientists, including Kim Cobb, professor in the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.
