Justin Hastings is an Assistant Professor in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs. His research focuses on the geographical underpinnings of illicit networks such as pirate gangs, terrorist organization, insurgencies, smuggling syndicates, and nuclear trafficking networks, largely in East and Southeast Asia. To that end, he has worked for the Department of Defense, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the Institute for Defense Analyses, and West Point’s Combating Terrorism Center.

He has also published articles on Uyghur rioting in China, terrorism in Singapore and Indonesia, smuggling in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China, and maritime piracy hijacking syndicates in Southeast Asia and East Africa. Hastings conducted fieldwork in Southeast Asia in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2009, much of it for his current book. He received a PhD in political science from the University of California, Berkeley in 2008.
