Each November the U.S. and Georgia Tech celebrate International Education Week or IEW and this year IEW will be November 18-22, 2019. IEW is a chance to celebrate our diverse global campus and the benefits of international exchange. Students can find out how to study or intern abroad, taste food from across the globe, see the photo contest winners and put themselves on the map in Clough Commons. This year we are honored to host Associate Professor Shannon Yee to discuss “Solving a Global Equity Challenge by Reinventing Toilet” from the global research funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. During IEW 2018, we had more than 2,200 attendees and more than 40 events. We hope your student will participate and they can learn more at iew.gatech.edu!

In addition to providing ample travel opportunities and life-long friendships, my exchange program with the University of Leeds allowed me to branch out and take classes in other areas of interest not related to engineering. The highlight of my academic experience while in Leeds was taking a course on the history of Victorian England. Since history is a favorite subject of mine, this experience was greatly enhanced by the number of Victorian buildings and historically significant sites in proximity to the University. Leeds itself is the archetypal Victorian city, with its city hall, numerous markets, and churches all prime examples of Victorian architecture. You might think that with my love of English history that I must have some English heritage, and you’d be right! Using the Leeds City Library and its population records, I traced a branch of my family back to 1150! So in addition to making great friends and learning much about the country, I learned quite a bit about my own family history as well!
