Faculty, staff, and students are invited to a reception and discussion about Congressman Jack Brooks on November 4 at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum. Hendrik Hertzberg (The New Yorker and President Jimmy Carter’s chief White House speechwriter) will lead the conversation with the authors of the newly released biography The Meanest Man in Congress: Jack Brooks and the Making of an American Century, Timothy and Brendan McNulty. Jack Brook’s son, Jeb Brooks, will also be in attendance.

  • Cocktail reception begins at 5:30 p.m.

  • Lecture begins at 7:00 p.m.

  • Post-Lecture book signing

Congressman Jack Brooks served alongside 10 presidents over his 42 years of public service. As the representative of Texas’ 9th congressional district, his career accomplishments include: 

  • Drafting the Articles of Impeachment for President Nixon, who gave Brooks the nickname “The Executioner”

  • Bearing witness to President Johnson’s swearing in on Air Force One

  • Was in President JFK’s motorcade during the assisantion
