Georgia Tech Human Resources (GTHR) is working with Georgia Tech Strategic Consulting and Huron Consulting to significantly enhance the delivery of human resources services to the campus community.

This collaborative effort, Excellence in Human Resources, addresses recommendations presented in the University System of Georgia (USG)’s Comprehensive Administrative Review (CAR) and will support Georgia Tech’s implementation of the OneUSG Connect human capital management (HCM) initiative when it goes live in Spring 2020.

“Our goal is to improve human resource systems and processes throughout the Institute, produce a seamless and consistent high-quality experience for all employees, and engage and support HR professionals for continued growth,” said Jim Fortner, interim executive vice president for Administration and Finance.

The plan consists of three primary components:

  1. Operating Model – Align people and reporting structures to better leverage GTHR in matters of human resources policies and procedure compliance.
  2. Organizational Structure – Create accountability for excellence in human resources through clear identification of roles, responsibilities, competencies, and performance standards.
  3. Process Redesign – Leverage changes occurring as a result of OneUSG Connect HCM to streamline human resource processes and implement customer service best practices.

This fall, the team is engaging a wide range of academic and administrative representatives across campus to gather input into the above proposed changes.

“The goal is to provide faculty, staff, and students with coordinated, consistent, and high-quality services for all human resource activities delivered across the Institute,” said Kim D. Harrington, associate vice president and chief human resources officer at Georgia Tech. “In order to do so, it is vital to have the right people and best processes in place by tapping the experience and perspectives of diverse campus constituencies.”

To date, the team has been successful in implementing several process enhancements; it has:

  • Organized a campuswide group to outline improvements to the student employment experience.
  • Launched Aspire, a leadership experience to provide professional development for emerging managers.
  • Streamlined processes to reduce the time required to review salary exceptions. In most cases, review time will decrease from 3-4 weeks to 7-10 business days.
  • Improved the reorganization process by reducing the average review time from approximately 31 business days to 23 business days.

Moving forward, the team anticipates additional process enhancements that are intended to greatly improve human resource services to the campus community. In addition, Georgia Tech will submit the detailed CAR action plan for the Institute, including human resource-related recommendations, to the USG Chancellor’s office later this fall. Once approved, implementation will begin.
