There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

Hosted by the Energy Club

Adam Barkley, Solutions Architect in the Power Electronics Systems R&D team at Wolfspeed, will be presenting an overview of recent advances in Silicon Carbide (SiC) MOSFET power semiconductor devices and packaging technology.  The talk will provide a short introduction to Wolfspeed, some history of the evolution of SiC power devices over the last 20+ years, and insight into how this wide bandgap technology is enabling many of today’s power electronics applications ranging from renewable energy to electric vehicles.   Several of the key electrical characteristics of the SiC MOSFET will be reviewed and compared to competing Silicon power semiconductor devices. Significant focus will be placed on the system-level benefits achievable when utilizing this technology; generally some combination of improved energy efficiency, smaller size, and lighter weight. Next, several medium voltage (3.3kV to 10kV) MOSFET devices will be presented which promise some radical new possibilities in the grid-connected power electronics and renewable energy spaces.  Finally, Adam will discuss the Cree | Wolfspeed internship program and encourage participation in the Career Fair. Questions and interactivity are highly encouraged throughout the talk.
