Dean and Stephen P. Zelnak Jr. Chair Maryam Alavi has been reappointed to a five-year term in the Scheller College of Business.

The reappointment follows a five-year performance review as required by the Georgia Tech Faculty Handbook. The review committee, chaired by Bonnie Ferri, vice provost for Graduate Education and Faculty Development, conducted a thorough assessment complemented by feedback from the College community including faculty, staff, and students; the College Advisory Board; and other colleagues throughout the Institute.

“I am pleased to announce the reappointment of Maryam Alavi as dean of the Scheller College of Business. During her tenure, the College has achieved new levels of excellence,” said Rafael L. Bras, provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs and K. Harrison Brown Family Chair. “From student strength and steady popularity of the undergraduate programs to increased enrollment in our MBA programs and others like the Master of Science in Quantitative and Computational Finance, Dean Alavi’s leadership has helped to ensure that our faculty is among the very best and that we are able to attract significant philanthropic support. I am thrilled that she will continue as the leader of the Scheller College of Business.”

The review committee commended Alavi’s contributions to the College and called out several achievements including the increase in rankings, growth in quality and diversity of the flagship full-time MBA program, advocacy for gender equality and women in business, and notable outreach to the business community and alumni.

“It has been a privilege to serve as the dean of the Scheller College of Business, and it is an honor to continue in this role. I am proud of the College’s accomplishments including the many contributions of faculty, staff, and students, and I am grateful to Provost Bras for his support and leadership,” said Alavi. “I look forward to advancing our trajectory towards becoming a leading business school of the 21st century. The College will continue to attract world-class and diverse faculty, students, and talented staff thanks to the ongoing support of our distinguished benefactors, alumni, corporate partners, and friends.”

The review committee was comprised of the following Scheller College of Business faculty members:

  • Jonathan Clarke – Associate Professor, Finance
  • Jeffrey Hales – Professor, Accounting
  • Brian Jennings – Associate Dean, MBA Programs and Executive Education
  • Frank Rothaermel – Professor, Strategy
  • Christina Shalley – Professor, Organizational Behavior

The reappointment was effective July 1 and runs through June 30, 2024.
