The High Museum of Art's catalogue for John Portman Art and Architecture (Oct. 2009-April 2010) recently received the Southeastern College Art Conference (SECAC) Award for Outstanding Exhibition and Catalogue of Contemporary Materials. The catalogue was authorod by Paul Goldberger and Georgia Tech architecture professor Robert M. Craig.

One juror described the work as a “beautiful and impressive catalogue of the work of an extraordinarily talented architect, artist and furniture designer.”  The catalogue was applauded for its “outstanding design and images” and the fact that it was “thorough and clearly written.”

SECAC is a national non-profit organization devoted to the promotion of visual art education, history, theory, design and studio practice in higher education through facilitating cooperation among teachers and administrators in universities, colleges, professional institutions and the communities served by their institutions. SECAC's annual awards program recognizes exemplary work in the visual arts in higher education.

The Portman catalog for the High Museum was Professor Craig’s first involvement with writing for a museum exhibition, although he earlier contributed to the book John Portman (1995) and co-authored with Mr. Portman and Aldo Castellano the 1997 book John Portman: An Island on an Island. He has been an active member of the Southeastern College Art Conference for 30 years, serving as editor of the SECAC Review (the society’s scholarly art journal) from 1983-1987. He received the society's Award for Excellence in Scholarly Research and Publication for his book Bernard Maybeck at Principia College: The Art and Craft of Building (2004).
