Lake Baikal, Russia, protest

Russian environmentalists rally to save a popular forest from development by making it into a cross-country ski-park on Nov. 23, 2012. The sign on the left reads, "The city needs a cross-country ski park." The sign on the right reads, "Nature is more important (than) profit." Kate Pride Brown, assistant professor in the School of History and Sociology, spent several months in Russia with environmentalists developing her "field of power" theory of civil society. She introduced the theory in her book, Saving the Sacred Sea: The Power of Civil Society in an Age of Authoritarianism and Globalization.
