Full Summary:

The University System has asked Donna Llewellyn, director of Georgia Tech’s Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning, to chair a task force that will recommend a next generation Learning Management System.

While Georgia Tech uses T-Square (Sakai) for its online collaboration platform, the University System of Georgia currently hosts a centralized Learning Management System (Blackboard Learning System - Vista 8) for 32 of the System’s institutions as part of the GeorgiaVIEW Service. Vista 8 operational support from Blackboard ends in January 2013 and there are currently serious issues of parity between Blackboard’s Vista 8 and its newest product, Learn 9.1.

The University System has asked Donna Llewellyn, director of Georgia Tech’s Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning, to chair a task force that will recommend a next generation Learning Management System. Georgia Tech will continue to use T-Square and will not be directly impacted by the decision facing the University System. However, since feedback is being gathered across the System, it was not appropriate to omit the Georgia Tech community from this process.

One of the major tasks ahead is getting input from instructors and students across the system about the important features of an LMS. As stated above, it is important to the task force to gather this feedback from all institutions in the system – even those who will not be influenced by this decision. To this end, we have created two surveys – one for students and one for faculty — that will remain open until November 12.
