The 10th annual President's Walk took place at the Campus Recreation Complex (CRC) on Thursday, May 16th. Georgia Tech employees and students gathered to promote community health and well-being on campus. Mark Demyanek, Interim Senior Vice President for Administration opened the signature event with a speech addressing the importance of community within Georgia Tech. Demyanek said, “We are very proud of our CRC facility, and on behalf of President Peterson and Georgia Tech executive leadership I would like to thank the CRC staff for sponsoring this fun and motivational event – and thank each of you for participating. It is so important to make time to get active; it’s what we need to strengthen our bodies, minds, and souls”. This year, the walk was part of the Employee Well-being week, which consisted of workshops, expos, and a free day at the CRC.
Demyanek led employees and students in this year’s walk around campus along the Tyler Brown Pi Mile. In his speech, he said, “This is an incredible way for the community of Georgia Tech to come together and bond. The Institute strongly supports this and all the other wonderful Health and Wellness initiatives led by our great staff.” This signature event celebrates the end of the spring semester while also incorporating fitness and comradery on campus.
“Fall and spring semesters are busy- everyone’s in their dorms, or friends are too busy to exercise with you, so it is hard to stay motivated. Having a huge event helps remind students to stay active” said Kyle Yang, Georgia Tech second-year mechanical engineering student. Second-year mechanical engineering student Joseph Ashley enjoyed last year’s walk so much that he came back for a second time. Ashley said, “I was a summer freshman last year. I loved seeing Buzz and President Peterson promote fitness. It helped motivate me to have a great first year at Georgia Tech.” Thank you to all of this year’s participants and we’ll see you again next year!
