Farmers markets are the easiest way to eat locally, support local businesses and find the freshest produce. You can learn exactly where the item comes from, how it’s produced and sometimes even meet the producer. Spring and summer months are ripe with produce and a great time to check out your local farmers market. We spoke to our very own Health initiatives dietitian, Leah Galante and she shared seven quick tips to make the most out of your shopping experience.

Buy in season produce – fruits and vegetables of the season offer amazing tastes and significant nutritional value.

Make a plan that includes spontaneity – Have an idea of what you need before heading to the market, but keep it general so you can shop what’s in season and/or looks the best to you.

Talk to the farmers to learn more – They are very knowledgeable about their crops and can offer helpful tips for how to use more unique items.

Try something new or different – try stepping outside your comfort zone and experiment with a new to you food to increase variety.

Pick your time to shop – Going early ensures higher availability of all the items for the day, and you’re more likely to have the first pick. However, going later can be beneficial as towards the end of market times farmers may discount items.

Make a loop before buying – take a walk around the whole market to check out the offerings of the day. You can use this time to decide what you really need, plan what you could make with certain items, and compare the prices of similar items.

Know your market/be prepared – Be familiar with the types of payment your market accepts and come prepared. Have a budget of what you plan to spend on that market trip, and bring reusable grocery bags to carry all your market finds!
