Abstract: 

This talk will discuss the principles of epidemiologic thinking and a foundation for population health sciences. Basic epidemiologic concepts including how best to answer a scientific question, consider causality, and conduct research of high impact to the population will be discussed.

Bio: 

Dr. Rachel Patzer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, Emory University School of Medicine, with joint appointment in the department of epidemiology in the Rollins School of Public Health. She has a PhD and MPH in epidemiology from Emory University. She is also the director of the newly formed Health Services Research Center at the Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Patzer is a health services researcher whose investigations focus on healthcare access, quality of healthcare delivery, and healthcare outcomes. She has specific research interests in disparities in social determinants of health, community-based participatory research, predictive analytics, health care quality, medication adherence and self-management, mobile health technology, patient education, and healthcare resource utilization.  Her recent research projects have focused on the development of a novel surveillance data registry for kidney disease, the development of quality metrics, epidemiologic investigations of the causes of variability in access to renal transplantation among pediatric and adult end-stage renal disease patients, and the development and evaluation of pragmatic interventions to improve access to transplantation.
