Georgia Tech Swim Club Repeats as National Champions Yellow Jackets swarmed on Columbus, Ohio, and brought home a national championship trophy.
Forty-two Georgia Tech student-athletes who make up the club swimming team bested 118 other collegiate club programs from across the nation at the FINIS College Club Swimming 2019 National Championship hosted by the Ohio State University.
The Georgia Tech women’s squad cruised to a first-place finish overall, outpacing second place University of Virginia by 300 points. Tech’s men finished in second place behind hosts Ohio State. With a combined score of 1,289 the Georgia Tech Swim Club defended the 2018 national title they won at home in Atlanta last year.
“This proves we didn’t need home field advantage,” said swim club president Makenna Laffey.
The Yellow Jacket women broke collegiate club swimming records in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100- and 400-yard individual medleys. Alex Rieger, Lindsay Knapp, Ellie Ridgeway, Ally Nastasi, and Rebecca Durham dominated the women’s relay events. Reiger won the Women's High Point Award for the individual female athlete scoring the most points.
The men’s team scored many of their points in breaststroke events, with strong finishes in the 50-, 100-, and 200-yard events.
