"A Half Century as a Psychologist"

Dr. Anderson Smith was Senior Vice Provost of Academic Affairs at Georgia Institute of Technology until 2012.  He is currently Regents Professor of Psychology Emeritus.  He received his B. A. degree from Washington and Lee University, and his Ph.D. in 1970 from the University of Virginia.  His research interests are in the area of cognitive aging and he was funded by the National Institute on Aging and the National Institute of Mental Health for over 35 years.  His research dealt with healthy adult age differences in memory.   At Georgia Tech, he won both the Sigma Xi Sustained Research Award and the Outstanding Teacher Award.  He is former editor of the Journal of Gerontology:  Psychological Sciences.  In 1997, the Division of Adult Development and Aging of the American Psychological Association (APA) gave him the “Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award.”  He has also served on the National Advisory Council on Aging, appointed by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.  He has been elected Fellow of APA, the Association for Psychological Science, and the  Gerontological Society.  He is also an affiliate scientist at the Yerkes National Primate Center at Emory University.  In 2005, Dr. Smith was named an Honorary Alumnus of Georgia Tech. In 2011, he received the APA Award for the Advancement of Psychology and Aging.

Even though he is retired, he teaches every semester and also is involved in a Massively Open On-line Course (MOOC) (Introduction to Psychology as a Science).  The first time Dr. Smith offered the course, he had over 20,000 students.
