Medieval themes are pervasive in pop culture—from “Game of Thrones” to A Knight’s Tale. But where do we draw the line between history and fiction? This course will provide students with an overview of the medieval period in Europe, from the fall of the Roman Empire to the Renaissance, which encompasses the period from about 500 to 1500 CE.

These times were much more than the “Dark Ages.” Students will learn about the complex political, economic, social, religious, and cultural developments that laid the foundations for early modern and modern Europe. From Barbarian invasions to the Great Schism, Charlemagne to the Crusades, Medieval Europe was time of exciting developments and concepts we still value today, such as chivalry, honor, and piety. This course will also take us outside of Europe as we see interactions with Byzantium, Islam, and the New World.
