It is important to take care of your mental and physical health, but don’t forget to focus on your sexual health as well. Sexual health is easily forgotten but is actually essential to staying well. In order to take care of your sexual health, it is important to be knowledgeable of what sexual health encompasses, specifically increasing basic awareness of common issues, protecting yourself from infections and focusing on intimacy. Being aware of sexual health can improve your health and that of your partner(s) as well.

It is important to be educated on the aspects of sexual health, but also recognize that not everyone is having sex. It’s a personal choice and preference and if you choose to engage in this type of activity it’s imperative that you are well informed.

Be aware of the basics

Understanding the basics of human desire and pleasure will jump start your sexual health, therefore it’s important to speak with your doctor related to any basic sexual health information you might be unaware of.

In addition, it is important to understand that physical impairments and other health issues can cause complications during sexual intercourse. Regular visits to your primary care physician or women’s center will help ensure that you are both physically and sexually healthy.

Protect yourself from infections

The only way to completely prevent yourself from sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is to not have sex. If you choose to have sex, it is important to protect yourself. STIs can be severe and sometimes cause lifelong damages. Knowing about sexual health means knowing about potential signs, symptoms, and causes of infections. Talk to your doctor about signs and symptoms and ways to protect yourself from STIs.

If you think you might be experiencing symptoms, get tested immediately. It is important to know how to properly treat your infection and protect your partner(s). Stamps Health Services provides low-cost testing to students and spouses.

Ask Questions and seek help

If there is something that is concerning you related to sexual health, do not be afraid to speak to a healthcare provider immediately. There are many different aspects and factors that play into your sexual health. Speaking to one health care provider might not be enough. Therefore it might be best to reach out to your primary care doctor, obstetrician-gynecologist, physical therapist, and or mental health professional if you are experiencing a sexual health issue that needs to be addressed.
