Swing dancing lessons. Plays. Choir concerts. If you enjoy the arts, there are plenty of on-campus options for indulging in a bit of culture when you’re not in the classroom or lab.

Read on for seven ways to infuse the arts into your day-to-day life at Georgia Tech.

  1. Find out what’s at Ferst. Thanks to the Ferst Center, for just $10, students can take in a season of shows ranging from a talk with Anne Frank’s stepsister to a concert with the first hologram pop star Maya Khodes. (The season runs now through March 29.)
  2. Visit the black box. Did you know that Tech has a student-run theater group? Welcome to DramaTech Theatre, which is a volunteer group of undergraduate and graduate students who work together to put on programming. For example, you can check out a reprise of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in April or improv performances, which occur every Friday night that a play is showing. Tickets are $8 for plays and $3 for improv shows.
  3. Dance the night away. If swing dancing sounds fun, check out one of the Georgia Tech Dance Association’s monthly dances. The group offers free lessons before the event, and there is a student discount for tickets to the dance. Come by the Student Center Ballroom at 8 p.m. on March 8 to take a lesson and grab a ticket. Or — if you’re feeling confident — skip the practice and join the dance at 8:30.
  4. Support local music. Looking for new musical artists to follow? Check out Under the Couch’s open mic nights every Thursday at 8 p.m. Students can show off any type of performance they like, whether it’s acoustic covers, original music, or even a comedy routine. In addition to open mic nights, the venue also hosts events including the Couchella competition in March and the Solo Artist Showcase in April. Both are free to attend.  
  5. Waltz away. Even if you have two left feet, don’t miss out on the social dances held every Thursday at 9:20 p.m. by the Ballroom Dance Club. These dances are held in the Student Center Ballroom, and you can gain access by becoming a member for a $55 fee. Membership also gets you access to weekly lessons and tickets to the club’s holiday events.
  6. Come to a choir concert. Thanks to Tech's two choirs, you have double the chances to listen to a group of beautifully blended voices. The Chamber Choir is a group of students who have auditioned and is known for singing classical music. The choir will hold their Spring Pitch-A-Piece concert on March 29 at 7 p.m. in Room 175, West Village. The Tech Chorale is made up of singers from any part of the Tech community and are known for singing a mix of contemporary and classical music. You can catch their next performance on March 10 at 3 p.m. in the Ferst Center and on and April 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Room 175, West Village.
  7. Use your discounts. In addition to the on-campus options, your student status also gets you access to discounts at art spots across Atlanta (think 25 percent off, $5 tickets, and even free admission). When you use the Tech Arts Pass program, you can attend shows at venues including Dad’s Garage Improv Theater, the Atlanta Contemporary, and the Atlanta Ballet. To access the discounts, simply show your Buzzcard when purchasing tickets at participating organizations.
