Medical Assistants WeekEvery year Medical Assistants (M.A.) Recognition Week (MARWeek) is celebrated during the third full week in October to recognize and celebrate the work of M.A,'s. They are cross-trained to perform administrative and clinical duties at Stamps Health Services including scheduling appointments, taking down patients medical history and performing basic medical labs to name a few.
We spoke to Women's Health Medical Assistant, Lani Tucker to gain greater insight into the inner workings of her role at Stamps Health Services.
What does your day to day look like as a Medical Assistant (M.A)?
My daily activities include both front and back office duties. I assist our Georgia Tech students, with a smile, from their first call to schedule an appointment, greeting them for their visit, taking vitals, ordering labs, giving immunizations, and assisting with discharge instructions and scheduling follow up appointments.
How long have you been an M.A. at Georgia Tech?
I've worked as a Certified/Registered Medical Assistant at Georgia Tech since 2011.
Why did you decide to become an M.A.?
I always wanted to work in healthcare because the human body intrigues me and I enjoy helping and educating others about health. I received my Associate of Applied Science in Medical Assisting in 2003.
What is your favorite thing about being an M.A.?
My favorite thing about being a Medical Assistant, besides helping others, is the time my job allows me to spend with my children. I get to fulfill my desire to practice health care and still have my evenings and weekends free.
What do you enjoy most about working at Georgia Tech?
I enjoy the cultural diversity I experience working here at Georgia Tech. It expands my knowledge of patient care of different diverse cultures according to their practices.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time learning new things and trying different types of food.
