The Georgia Planning Association has named two Georgia Tech student teams as recipients of 2010 Outstanding Student Project Awards to be presented at GPA’s conference in Valdosta, 1 October 2010.
The City and Regional Planning studio, Industrial Land and Sustainable Industry in the City of Atlanta, was completed by Kale Driemeier (MCRP ’10), Nate Hoelzel (PhD class of ’12), Jodi Mansbach (MCRP ’10), Edward Morrow (MCRP class of ’11), Charles Moseley (MCRP ’10), Rahul Jain (MCRP and MSPP class of ’11), Shelley Stevens (MCRP ’10), and Ermis Zayas (MCRP ’10) in Fall 2009 under the direction of Professor Nancey Green Leigh, FAICP. This studio responds to the growing loss of industrial land in the City, provides the core of what will be Atlanta’s first industrial land use plan and policy that promotes sustainability and equity, and culminates in a range of industrial retention and attraction and workforce development policies designed using examples from cities recognized as leaders in industrial policy-making. The project was funded by the Atlanta Development Authority.
The Urban Design studio, The Stadium Neighborhoods Tad: An Urban Design Strategy for Stakeholder Decisions, completed by Cassie Branum (MS-UD ’10; MCRP ‘10), Jason Combs (MCRP ’10; MS-UD ‘10), Dan Hawthorne (MARCH ‘10), Justin Chapman (MCRP ‘10) and three seniors: Hrach Burtoyan, Kristin Kellogg, and Taylor Smith (BS ARCH 2010) was completed in Spring 2010 under the direction of Associate Professor Richard Dagenhart. The studio developed urban design strategies for the redevelopment of the Turner Field–Atlanta Braves surface parking lots. The strategies included an urban street and block framework for future mixed use developments, parking decks replacing the 8600 existing spaces, future transit access, green space, and careful integration with the surrounding neighborhoods. The project was funded by the Atlanta Development Authority.
