Students, faculty and staff are invited to attend the Georgia Tech Research Institute Machine Services Department’s open house on Tuesday, September 28, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the department’s new location, 676 Marietta St. The first 100 attendees will receive a barbecue lunch from Williamson Bros.

From fabricating the impossibly small to large-scale, room-sized projects, MSD strives to craft the custom items needed by students, faculty and researchers. The department moved from the Hinman Building in April to its current location, a high-bay space in the same building as the Advanced Wood Products Laboratory.

MSD has designed, fabricated, assembled and repaired clients’ custom projects for more than 70 years, and each craftsman can claim more than 25 years of experience. Along with the legacy of experience, the department uses the latest EDM (electrical discharge machines) and CNC (computer numerical controlled) and water-jet machines, which can produce the most intricate and precise machining in wood, plastic and metal.

“Students and faculty at Georgia Tech comprise the majority of our clients, but we have provided work for a number of University System of Georgia Institutions, as well as for Wake Forest University, Emory University, University of Alabama at Birmingham and Phoenix Air,” said MSD Manager Dennis Brown.

The MSD main shop is located on Marietta Street, and open from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. A satellite location at the Cobb County Research Facility is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. Lead times for projects can be as little as a day or two for small jobs, or up to several weeks for larger items.
