Jerry Ulrich directingOn Friday, March 4, and Saturday, March 5, the Georgia Tech Chamber Choir will perform Bach’s monumental Mass in B Minor, completed during the last year of Bach’s life and generally considered to be one of the greatest masterworks of Western art music. Both performances begin at 7:00 p.m. and tickets are available at www.newtrinitybaroque.org/onlinestore/tickets.
Tech director of choral activities Jerry Ulrich cited New York Times music critic Anthony Tommasini who recently commended Bach’s ‘matchless combination of masterly musical engineering.’ According to Ulrich, “The Chamber Choir is comprised primarily of more ‘traditional’ engineers, so we are eager to face the challenge of interpreting Bach’s work in the most ambitious choral performances in the history of the Georgia Tech School of Music.”
“We will be employing Baroque instruments, Austro-German Latin, in notoriously difficult church acoustics, with singers who are approximately the age of Bach’s Thomaskirche choir,” he explained.
Ulrich will conduct Friday’s performance with the New Trinity Baroque orchestra of period instruments, the chorus and the professional soloists at St. John’s United Methodist Church (550 Mt. Paran Road, NW, Atlanta). Saturday’s performance will be conducted by New Trinity Baroque founder and music director Predrag Gosta, at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church (1790 Lavista Road NE, Atlanta).
The concerts will be the Southeastern United States premiere of the newly published Breitkopf edition of the B Minor Mass, edited by preeminent Bach scholar Joshua Rifkin. Professional soloists will be soprano Wanda Yang Temko, male alto Terry Barber, tenor Adam Kirkpatrick, and bass Paul Max Tipton.
