The Georgia Veterans Memorial Foundation has selected the Imagine Lab in Georgia Tech’s College of Architecture to create a 3-D interactive visualization of the Georgia Veterans Memorial, which is under construction in Rockdale County.

Designed to help engage the community and encourage philanthropic support for the project, users will be able to experience the new environment in multiple formats:

  • Navigate a 3-D panoramic tour of the three-acre memorial, including concepts for the landscape and permanent structures such as the "Walk of Heroes" and “Warfront” sections, designed by Breedlove Land Planning, a Rockdale County based landscape architecture and civil engineering firm; and a museum and conference center currently being designed in conjunction with Praxis3, an architectural firm led by Georgia Tech architecture instructor Stuart Romm;
  • Select and donate engraved brick pavers to make a meaningful gift;
  • Visit the web-based environment hosted in Google Earth; and
  • See a timeline animation showcasing the progress of the memorial site from 1988 to the future.

“We were pleased to be selected to recreate and help visualize future phases of the Georgia Veterans Memorial,” said Imagine Lab Director Anatoliusz “Tolek” Lesniewski. “We look forward to helping the foundation realize their vision for a place that will foster public understanding of the dedication of veterans and their families.”

“Proposals for this project came from across the nation, and Georgia Tech was deemed to be uniquely qualified to provide us with this 3-D model,” said Norman Wheeler, Chairman of the Georgia Veterans Memorial Foundation. “When the project is complete, I think any veteran, whether a resident of Georgia or visiting from other parts of the country, will be able to go to the memorial in Rockdale County to reflect and never forget the sacrifices of our veterans, to honor those who served and to remember those who fell.”

Supporters can get involved by making a tax-exempt donation to the Georgia Veterans Memorial Foundation, or purchase an engraved paver to be placed on the Walk of Heroes at www.georgiaveteransmemorial.com.

“The Georgia Veterans Memorial is a great accomplishment for Rockdale County and our nation,” said Rockdale County Chairman and CEO Richard A. Oden. “To be entrusted with what we envision to be a national treasure, a place that honors and celebrates our veterans, is a real privilege.  The essence of this memorial will help accentuate the county's heritage and provide a major boost to our local economy by attracting thousands of new visitors to the area.”

About the Georgia Veterans Memorial

The Georgia Veterans Memorial is located on a three-acre site within Black Shoals Park, adjacent to Randy Poynter Lake in Rockdale County. This serene setting provides the perfect backdrop for visitors to remember, reflect and rejoice as well as foster a common understanding of the sacrifices and uncommon dedication of veterans and their families. Now twenty percent complete, the Memorial currently features an amphitheater; entrance gateway and vestibule; and a 1,500-feet-long “Walk of Heroes” path constructed of pavers and marble bands. Other features yet to be built include the “Warfront” and “Homefront” sections that will emphasize the sacrifices veterans, both home and abroad, have made over the 20th Century to secure our freedom. Outdoor classrooms also will be constructed to educate visitors about each of the last five major conflicts including World Wars I and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Persian Gulf War.
