One of the nation’s top research universities, the Georgia Institute of Technology is distinguished by its commitment to improving the human condition through the application of advanced technologies in the built environment. The College of Architecture is a national leader in architecture and construction education. According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, faculty in the College rank third in scholarly productivity among all schools of architecture and construction with more than double the volume of research productivity among the top ten schools ranked. The College seeks to be a pioneer in the reformation of design and construction education in the United States.

The School of Building Construction, reformed in 2010 as one of five schools within the College of Architecture, seeks to become the leading force of innovation in integrated project delivery, integrated facility management and program management. It is the fastest growing among the five Schools in the College of Architecture, almost doubling in size in the last decade.  Its undergraduate degree is accredited by the American Council for Construction Education. Its graduate degree is recognized by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and the International Facility Management Association. As a part of its educational mission, the School of Building Construction currently enrolls 143 undergraduates and 132 graduate students. Plans are underway for a PhD.

Position Description

The Chair of the School of Building Construction will report to the Dean of the College. The Chair is expected to provide the overall strategic direction for the School, with particular focus on the faculty’s aspiration to redefine construction education. The Chair also will have the opportunity to further expand relationships with the other Schools of the College: Architecture, City and Regional Planning, Industrial Design, and Music; the College’s seven research centers; and other units across campus, especially the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the College of Management. The Chair will provide strong leadership and an innovative, forward-looking vision for the faculty of the School. The Chair will be expected to expand upon the College’s interdisciplinary approach, which pursues collaborative research and education with partners in a variety of disciplines.

Candidate Profile

Candidates must have a professional graduate degree in construction management, civil engineering, environmental engineering or related field, a doctorate is preferred but not essential, an established record of scholarship, an on-going pursuit of research and/or practice, and a demonstrated ability to lead.

The salary will be competitive commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Review of applications will begin in October of 2010 but will continue until the position is filled.
