Michael Hoffmann at SRPoiSE ConferenceJune 4 - 6, faculty members from the Georgia Tech School of Public Policy facilitated the fourth international conference for the Consortium for Socially Relevant Philosophy of/in Science and Engineering (SRPoiSE). The international philosophy conference was held at the Historic Academy of Medicine where attendees from the U.S.A., Canada, Germany, and the Netherlands convened to address significant philosophical questions regarding pressing scientific issues.
Numerous faculty from the School of Public Policy presented their research and facilitated discussions including Associate Professor Justin Biddle, Professor Emeritus Alan Porter, and Professor Michael Hoffmann. Given SRPoiSE’s international makeup, it was notable that Georgia Tech was chosen as the location of the conference.
Na’Taki Osborne Jelks gave the keynote address entitled, “From Peril to Possibilities: Advancing Water Equity Through Community-Engaged Research in NW Atlanta’s Proctor Creek Watershed.” Other key themes included developing effective communication strategies for complex scientific issues such as climate change, defining the appropriate roles for academic experts in democratic deliberation, incorporating responsible research and innovation into STEM education, and examining whether concerns about antagonism towards scientists are justified.
The School of Public Policy is part of the Georgia Tech Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts.
