On May 25, 2018, Carla Gerona, associate professor in the School of History and Sociology attended a conference themed Encounters, Rights and Sovereignty in the Iberian Empires at Centro Interdiciplinar de História, Culturas e Sociedades, University of Évora, Portugal.
At the conference, she presented a paper Creating and Mining Data: Late-Eighteenth Century East Texas Census Records to a group of international scholars. The research examines the value of word clouds in analyzing census data. Gerona’s findings indicate that word clouds create powerful visualizations and aggregate data efficiently, but not as clearly as other statistical methods.
