There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

Eleven undergraduate women are spending the summer as researchers in the School of Biological  Sciences. They are participants in Aquatic Chemical Ecology, the National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program in the school.

The undergraduate women come from the following universities and colleges:

  • Agnes Scott College
  • Brandeis University
  • College of Wooster
  • Cornell University
  • George Mason University
  • Florida International University
  • Norfolk State University
  • Stony Brook University
  • University of Georgia
  • University of Notre Dame

That all participants are women is a happy coincidence.

The undergraduate researchers will work alongside Georgia Tech faculty and graduate students, doing research in the following areas:

  • Biological and geochemical transformations of chemicals in aquatic ecosystems
  • Sensory biology and ecology of aquatic chemical communication
  • Ecological roles and consequences of chemicals in aquatic environment

Organizing the program is biologist Frank Stewart, an associate professor in the school. He and 10 other mentors will mentor the undergraduate researchers:

  • Steve Diggle
  • Brian Hammer
  • Lin Jiang
  • Kostas Konstantinidis
  • Julia Kubanek
  • Patrick McGrath
  • Frank Stewart
  • Yuanzhi Tang
  • Martial Taillefert
  • Donald Webster
  • Jeannette Yen

While at Georgia Tech, the undergraduate researchers will receive training in critical research skills, including:

  • Maintaining a lab notebook
  • Delivering oral presentations
  • Research ethics
  • Designing effective posters
  • Scientific writing
  • Networking
  • Applying to graduate school
  • Interviewing

The REU program will conclude with poster session on July 25, 2018, 2-4 PM, in the Molecular Science and Engineering Building, 901 Atlantic Dr NW, Atlanta, GA 30318.
