There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Abstract: UrbanRemix is a participatory mobile phone system and web interface for recording, browsing and mixing audio. It allows users to explore the unique sounds of their urban environment as they are documenting and listening to their surroundings to build a local acoustic identity. Our vision for UrbanRemix was to turn participants into active creators of collective soundscapes as they search the city for interesting sonorities and to reframe the city into a location for new experiences of the available audiovisual palette. We will present the project as well as some recent workshops we ran with the software including the Art of the Beltline project in Atlanta, the City Centered Festival in San Francisco, and a summer camp with the Woodruff Arts Center.
