Rebecca Burnett, a professor in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication (LMC) at Georgia Institute of Technology, received the 2018 Regents’ Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award. Burnett was recognized for her ability to embed the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), a growing movement in post-secondary education that uses discovery, reflection, and evidence-based methods to research effective teaching and student learning, into her own teaching, research, and professional service. She was officially recognized at the annual Regents’ Scholarship Gala at the St. Regis Hotel Atlanta on Friday, March 2, 2018.

The Board of Regents voted unanimously to recommend Burnett as one of this year’s recipients. The committee was impressed with the fact that Burnett’s research reaches far beyond Georgia Tech, and has helped to encourage SoTL research at the local, state, and national levels through mentoring, presentations, workshops, publications, and an online course.

More than 450 guests including the USG presidents, regents, the chancellor, corporate sponsors and elected officials, including the governor and first lady attended. The award included $5,000.

Rebecca Burnett received her B.A. from the University of Massachusetts, her M.Ed. Curriculum in Administration from the University of Massachusetts, and her M.A. and Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to joining LMC, she was a professor of Rhetoric and Processional Communication in the Department of English at Iowa State University.

This award highlights the innovation in the Writing and Communication Program in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication; and Georgia Tech’s Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts under Burnett’s leadership.

LMC is part of Georgia Tech’s Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts.
