The Georgia Institute of Technology welcomes Joy-Ann Reid, national correspondent for MSNBC and author of Fracture: Barack Obama, the Clintons, and the Racial Divide, to discuss the future of Dr. King’s legacy and vision of a beloved community, achieved through nonviolent principles, during Georgia Tech’s Seventh Annual MLK Lecture, “Actualizing the Dream: The Future of Nonviolent Political Protest.”

Reid was previously the host of “The Reid Report,” a daily program that offered Reid’s distinctive analysis and insight on the day’s news. Before that, she was the managing editor of the Grio.com, a daily online news and opinion platform devoted to delivering stories and perspectives that reflect and affect African-American audiences.

It has been 50 years since the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., yet many of the same interrelated issues, including poverty, racism, and militarism, continue to stand as barriers to “transforming the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.”

If Martin Luther King Jr. were alive today, how would he view his philosophy of nonviolence during our current struggles for social and interpersonal change? Does nonviolence have a place to be effective in our culture of socioeconomic status, racial and ethnic divisions, and mass shootings?

The event will be sponsored by the Georgia Tech Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, Institute Diversity, the Office of Government and Community Relations, and the Office of Student Diversity Programs.

Ivan Allen College Dean Jacqueline Royster co-chairs the Planning Committee, and the School of History and Sociology (HSOC) Associate Professor Bill Winders is also part of the Committee.
