This week is Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, an annual opportunity to shine a spotlight on the problems of hunger and homelessness and organize our communities to take action.

Georgia Tech's Students' Temporary Assistance and Resource (STAR) program is hosting an interactive Hunger 101 Simulation in conjunction with the Atlanta Community Food Bank to raise awareness about the barriers to food security, and the complex consequences food insecurity can have on people’s lives.

As about 1 in 10 students at Georgia Tech experience food insecurity, it is likely that someone you know will have experienced food insecurity and/or hunger at some point, or will know someone who has. This workshop is for anyone trying to understand the complex issues surrounding hunger, food insecurity, and poverty in America.

Objectives of this simulation is to:

  • Explore the relationship between poverty & hunger
  • To illuminate the impact food security has on health incomes
  • To identify the major barriers to food security through discussion based activity
