Lightning kills an average of 58 people and injures approximately 300 others each year.  According to the National Weather Service, lightning can strike as far as 10 miles from the area where it is raining, about the distance you can hear thunder. If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance, so you should seek safe shelter immediately. Additional lightning safety guidelines can be found at the following link: http://www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov/overview.htm.  In addition, information on common lightning myths and realities can be found at http://www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov/myths.htm.

You can stay informed about specific severe weather conditions impacting campus by subscribing to severe weather alerts. Go to http://www.police.gatech.edu/weather.htm for details on how to sign up.
