In the spring of 2008, an interdisciplinary team of graduate students from the College of Architecture and the Health Systems Institute collaborated to design a 12-bed hospital in the coastal village of West Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia. Working alongside members of the local community and staff from Health in Harmony, a local organization linking environmental and individual health, the team was given a remarkable opportunity to bring high quality healthcare to an impoverished and under-served community. The final designs reflect a facility that is both culturally sensitive and locally appropriate, giving deep consideration to traditional building methods and materials, local culture, sustainable practice and the latest research in evidence-based design.

PBS NewsHour Extra featured the effort in one of its stories, "No Insurance, On Borneo the Doc Takes Manure". Visit the PBS NewsHour Extra Video Clipboard to view a short video clip.
