The November 2017 issue of Resource and Energy Economics will feature an original research article by SOE assistant professor Matthew E. Oliver and former SOE associate professor Byung-Cheol Kim (now at University of Alabama). The article is titled “Taming Drillers through Legislative Action: Evidence from Pennsylvania’s Shale Gas Industry.” It describes an empirical analysis of natural gas well permit and operations data from the Marcellus shale region in Pennsylvania both before and after major amendments to the state’s Oil and Gas Act were passed in February of 2012 to tighten regulations on the development of shale gas resources. Kim and Oliver find that the amendments induced firms to acquire fewer shale well permits and elevate environmental protection effort in operations.
