Recent Advances in Idealized Modeling

There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

Summaries

Summary Sentence: A seminar by Dr. Yi Ming, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) Fall 2017 Seminar Speaker Series

Full Summary:

The School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Fall 2017 Seminar Series Presents: Yi Ming, Princeton University, Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory/NOAA

Idealized models are important tools for understanding the behaviors of comprehensive climate models, and for addressing some of the fundamental questions in atmospheric science. In this talk, I will discuss two new additions to the model hierarchy, namely a dry GCM with passive water vapor and clouds (http://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/abs/10.1175/JCLI-D-16-0812.1), and a highly simplified moist GCM with full radiative transfer, and substantiate their utility in understanding mid-latitude cloud feedback and ITCZ location.
