Self-Driving Cars and Ethics: An Overview of Design Challenges

a talk by

Dr. Jason Borenstein

Friday, September 22
11:15 a.m.
TSRB Auditorium

About the Talk:
Engineers are in the process of developing and deploying a broad range of vehicles with varying levels of autonomy.  As these vehicles start to appear on the roads more regularly, the importance of examining the extensive collection of ethical issues that could emerge becomes increasingly pressing.  Key ethical issues that warrant examination include potential “Trolley problems” and complexities associated with design decisions to take the human driver “out of the loop” from operating a vehicle.  Given how unpredictable interactions between human users and automated systems may be, engineers will need to work with various stakeholders in the effort to uphold public safety.
