Today’s global business environment is characterized by speed, scale, and scope. New technologies emerge rapidly and new firms are continuously disrupting established industries. In order to compete and survive, firms must find new ways to innovate and are often looking to the outside to do so. The complex, interconnected, and rapidly evolving nature of business ecosystems, however, makes systemic insights challenging. Contemporary approaches typically use a myopic lens, focusing on direct partners, suppliers, customers, and competitors. Yet, the danger of such limited perspectives is an underestimation of risks and opportunities lurking in the periphery.
In this talk, I will discuss the transformative value as well as challenges of designing and deploying interactive visualization tools to understand the structure and strategy of complex ecosystems. I will demonstrate some of the tools we have developed in the Computational Enterprise Science Lab, present case studies, and offer my thoughts on how emerging technologies may impact strategic decision making and enterprise intelligence in the future.
Speaker Bio:
Rahul C. Basole is an associate professor at the School of Interactive Computing and directs the Computational Enterprise Science Lab. He is also the director for Enterprise Transformation at the Tennenbaum Institute/IPaT at Georgia Tech, a visiting scholar in HSTAR/mediaX at Stanford University, and a fellow of the Batten Institute at the Darden School of Business. His research and teaching focuses on computational enterprise science, information visualization, and strategic decision support, with a focus on complex enterprise systems. His work received several best paper awards, has been recognized by the media, including the New York Times, Fortune Magazine, and CNBC, and he has published extensively in leading computer science, management, and engineering journals and conferences. Dr. Basole is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Enterprise Transformation and an editorial board member of Decision Support Systems and INFORMS Service Science. He holds a BS from Virginia Tech, a MS from the University of Michigan, and a PhD from Georgia Tech. Contact him at basole@gatech.edu.
