Abstract
Discussion of the nuances of a biomedical engineer’s career pathways in business and academia. Dr. Boyd has moved from the business world to academia to founding several start-ups and back to a private equity-funded venture here in Atlanta. An overview of these various settings and experiences will transition to Q&A discussion of the challenges and opportunities of these very different work environments.
Biography
Previously, Larry Boyd, Ph.D., served as a Director at Medtown Ventures and as a Vice President of Engineering and Business Development at Spine Wave. He is an international leader in medical device innovation, with over 60 issued U.S. patents for medical devices and related procedures. Boyd is an experienced business leader & manager, with a 25-year career leading product development, engineering and business development efforts around medical devices. He had an extensive career with Medtronic Sofamor Danek, starting with the post-IPO Danek Medical in 1992 up to the acquisition by Medtronic, with positions of increasing responsibility, culminating in a worldwide product development leadership position for the Interbody Division. Prior to Sofamor Danek, Boyd was a product development engineer and group leader at Dow Corning Wright.
Boyd received his BS degree in Mechanical Engineering and MS degree in Bioengineering from Clemson University and later secured a Master of Engineering Management degree from Christian Brothers University. He received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University and held the position of Associate Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Research Commercialization at Duke. In addition, Boyd was an adjunct professor for the Biomedical Engineering Department and the Masters of Engineering Management Program at Duke. He is the Founder and President of Palmetto Biomedical, Inc. He is also a co-founder of two medical device ventures, View Medical and Orthoclip.
