Southeast Regional Office; Atlanta, GA
September 2017 to May 2018

The candidate selected will provide support to the Southeast Regional National Historic Landmarks Program. National Historic Landmarks (NHLs) are nationally significant historic places designated by the Secretary of the Interior because they possess exceptional value or quality in illustrating or interpreting the heritage of the United States. Most NHLs are privately owned, although some are owned by local, State, or Federal government agencies. There are more than 400 NHLs in the Southeast Region of the National Park Service, which consists of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The primary focus of this internship will be outreach and education related to the Savannah NHL district. A main responsibility of the selected candidate will be the organization of a photo contest of NPS related sites in and around Savannah. NPS is hosting the photo contest to gather images for use in a brochure about NPS parks and programs in the city. The intern will also have the responsibility of drafting text for the brochure and coordinating the formatting and layout with the NPS’ graphic designer. This project is being undertaken in conjunction with a study to evaluate the National Register integrity of the Savannah NHL District. The candidate selected may be expected to travel to Savannah to attend meetings related to the project.

The selected candidate will also be expected to perform the below duties:

  • Create an easily understandable and updateable database and use it to compile NHL condition information.
  • As occasions arise conduct research into the National significance and historic contexts of historic properties that are proposed as National Historic Landmarks
  • Miscellaneous administrative tasks

Throughout the internship the candidate will have the opportunity to participate in trainings (online and classroom). The candidate will also have informational interviews with members of the division representing different disciplines (museum and archival services, historical architecture, cultural landscapes and history) to talk about different opportunities in cultural resources and different career paths.

The candidate should have an understanding of principals of historic preservation, although not required, a Master’s degree in public history, historic preservation, or a related field is desired. Skills required include: detail oriented with strong organizational skills; the ability to work independently, i.e. can devise ways to accomplish a task without having step-by-step instructions; strong communication and interpersonal skills, i.e. feels comfortable reaching out to NHL stewards. Knowledge of Flickr also needed.

Compensation is at a rate of $14 per hour • Travel stipend $95 per month is provided
