There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. An Atlanta City Council committee gave the green light Wednesday for a demonstration project that will deploy smart technology along North Avenue to improve traffic flow and reduce vehicle accidents. The council's Transportation Committee unanimously approved a resolution authorizing an agreement between the city and the Georgia Tech Research Corp. committing up to $350,000 toward the $3 million project. Eighteen intersections along the North Avenue corridor between the Georgia Tech campus and Ponce City Market will be equipped with "smart" traffic signals that can be adjusted in real time to account for traffic conditions, said Faye DiMassimo, who is leading the project for the city. The street will be repaved and restriped to allow the placement of sensors, she said. "That can help us not only with congestion," she said. "It's really part of improving safety along this corridor."
