Matt VentrescaMatt Ventresca presents: "Scanning Brains and Reading Minds: Sport's 'Concussion Crisis' and the Curious Case of CTE."
Matt Ventresca is a postdoctoral fellow in the Sports, Society and Technology program in HSOC. He completed his PhD in Kinesiology and Health Studies at Queen’s University (Kingston, Ontario) specializing in the sociocultural study of sport, health and the body. His research examines the intersections of sport, health and masculinity in the context of media and popular culture. Matt has studied how global charitable events in support of “men’s health” (e.g. Movember) communicate complex and often problematic ideas about manhood, consumer culture and the path to social change. He is currently conducting research that explores the social and cultural implications of sport’s ongoing “concussion crisis.” Working at the crossroads of media studies, gender studies and science and technology studies, Matt is investigating how scientific and medical knowledge about brain injuries are packaged by the media for mass consumption and used to frame broader conversations about health, gender and sport cultures. He will also be working with Dr. William Bridel and Dr. Kathryn Schneider at the University of Calgary to launch a cross-border study examining the social and cultural dynamics shaping the experiences of athletes undergoing treatment for sport-related concussions.
Matt has published research concerning the role of food in sport cultures, the use of prescription painkillers and performance-enhancing technologies in pro sports, and the politics of sports stadiums. He currently teaching SST courses including Foundations of Sports Studies, and Science, Technology and Sports.
