Eric Schatzberg, professor of history of science and director of the Robert F. and Jean E. Holtz Center for Science and Technology Studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison has been named chair of the School of History and Sociology (HSOC) in Georgia Tech’s Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts.

Schatzberg studied at Swarthmore College and the London School of Economics before earning his Ph.D. in History and Sociology of Science from the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests include the history of technology, culture, and science with particular emphasis on postwar technology. Schatzberg’s scholarship on technology and culture has repeatedly received international recognition. His forthcoming book (University of Chicago Press) addresses the intellectual history of the concept of technology.

Schatzberg founded and directed the Holtz Center in Science and Technology Studies, a nationally recognized locus for diverse and interdisciplinary research and public programming. As director, Schatzberg emphasized administrative leadership across disciplines and secured significant external funding.

Schatzberg brings to HSOC a strong collaborative ability and considerable experience in both teaching and leadership.

Dean Jacqueline Royster expressed confidence in Schatzberg’s unique combination of historical, theoretical, and technological perspective which will allow him to actively engage colleagues in schools throughout the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts and in schools across the Institute. Schatzberg began July 3, 2017.
