Alumnus Rawi Abdelal, the Herbert F. Johnson Professor of International Management at Harvard University, received the Economics Distinguished Alumni Award during a special program April 12, 2017, at the Historic Academy of Medicine.

Abdelal flew in from Harvard to join the evening’s festivities which included a buffet networking reception and the awards program hosted by the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts. Dean Jacqueline Royster and School Chairs presented awards to alumni from each of the College’s six schools.

A 1993 graduate of the School of Economics, Abdelal was introduced by Professor Usha Nair-Reichert:

I am delighted to welcome and introduce this year's distinguished recipient from the School of Economics, Professor Rawi E. Abdelal, the Herbert F. Johnson Professor of International Management at the Harvard Business School.

Rawi Abdelal was a President's Scholar, and graduated from Georgia Tech in 1993 with the highest honors. His distinguished career at the Harvard Business School epitomizes his passion and commitment as an educator, with outstanding achievements in research, teaching and institution building.

Professor Abdelal's expertise is international political economy, and his research focuses on the politics of globalization and the political economy of Eurasia. In addition to numerous journal articles, book chapters and case studies, Professor Abdelal is the author of two highly acclaimed scholarly books, and has co-edited 3 others.  He is currently working on his third book," The Profits of Power," a very timely exploration of the geopolitics of energy in Europe and Eurasia.

His first book, National Purpose in the World Economy, won the 2002 Shulman Prize.

Professor Abdelal is an inspiring and innovative teacher who cares very deeply about teaching and his students. He has received numerous teaching awards at Harvard Business School - several HBS Student Association Faculty Awards for Outstanding Teaching, the Charles M. Williams Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Apgar Award for Innovation in Teaching, to name a few.

He has also contributed in very significant ways to institution building at HBS. He is the director of the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies, and served as chair of the first year MBA Required Curriculum at HBS. He received the Robert F. Greenhill Award on two occasions for his significant contributions to HBS.

Rawi Abdelal has also been a great friend to Georgia Tech.  His wife Tracey and he have welcomed and mentored Georgia Tech graduates who subsequently joined Harvard.

Please join me in celebrating the School of Economics Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, Rawi Abdelal, and his many accomplishments.
