The Digital Building Lab (DBL) will host the annual Members’ Meeting and workshops on May 8-10, 2017, at Georgia Tech.
The DBL is a research lab within the College of Design at Georgia Tech. The director is Dennis Shelden.
The Members’ Meeting on Monday, May 8, will focus on introducing AEC and technology research initiatives from across Georgia Tech to the DBL members in order to get feedback, prioritize, and solicit participation by members in these research areas. Further details, including research proposals and schedule, will be forthcoming.
This year the DBL will add two days of industry workshops with more focused and lengthier discussions on specific topics for industry advancement. Members are welcome to attend these meetings. These workshops will run Tuesday and Wednesday, May 9-10. In addition to DBL members and Georgia Tech researchers, a number of industry leaders in these topics will be present.

Subcontracting trades’ data standards and workflows
Tuesday, May 9: Morning
The DBL has performed data standard and information delivery (IDM / MVD) development for numerous trades over the past decade. A number of new technical developments promise renewed interest and value for this standardization work: extending the data standards to web-based information exchanges and developing overall industry frameworks for data exchange workflows. This workshop will provide an overview and summary of existing work and discussions of potential forward-looking applications of the data to future industry data initiatives. The workshop will bring together representatives of the industry trade organizations with leaders of next generation data and exchange initiatives.
AEC web data services technologies
Tuesday, May 9: Afternoon and Wednesday, May 10: Morning
Web- and internet-data and communications protocols are rapidly evolving as needs for data interoperability and exchange encounter new demands of technology paradigms, including web microservices, web ontology applications (OLWL), and the Internet of Things (IoT). The existing technical frameworks for AEC data exchange (IFC / EXPRESS) are being reconsidered in light of these developments. This workshop will bring together leading experts pursuing advances in the architecture of web-based AEC data exchanges, with the goal of initiating a set of research and development tasks to develop out this next generation AEC data architecture.
