The Georgia Tech community is invited to grab a free King of Pops and check out the latest student social innovation initiatives at the annual Ideas to Serve Competition on Wednesday, April 19, at 6 p.m. at the Scheller College of Business Atrium.

Teams will present their projects, aimed at creating a better world, on a poster, pitch their ideas, and answer questions from judges and the audience. Prizes in two categories (Ideas and Advanced) will be awarded, and audience members will be able to vote for their favorite project.

Some of the teams to look out for this year in the Ideas Track include condüit, an app that connects students with volunteer organizations and allows school administration to easily verify and track service hours, and AlcoBand, an affordable and intuitive alcohol self-detecting wristband for college students to prevent excess drinking. In the Advanced Track, Lunula Health created a noninvasive method to measure hemoglobin levels using smartphone images of the patient’s fingernail beds.

In addition to prize money, a significant benefit the competition provides is a half-day workshop and mentor matching. This year, teams benefitted from the expertise and skills of from the Scheller College of Business graduate students who advised the early-stage projects on their social impact measurements, go-to-market strategies, and financials.

All six colleges are represented in this year’s participants, and female participation is at an all-time high of 53 percent.
