School of Physics Seminar - Soft Condensed Matter & Physics of Living Systems

*********************************
There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

Title: Signals and forces that control the dynamics of multicellular tissues

Abstract:
A major morphogenetic event during the development of the embryo is the elongation of the head-to-tail body axis, a process that requires rapid and coordinated movements of hundreds of cells.
Her lab identified the force-generating machinery that drives polarized cell movements during axis elongation in Drosophila, and discovered that these movements are systematically oriented by a global positional code that involves an ancient family of receptors that are widely used for pathogen recognition by the innate immune system.
These studies elucidate general principles that link cellular-level asymmetries and mechanical forces to global tissue reorganization.
