As the semester progresses, students may struggle to find the best study techniques. Midterm exams present a challenge and can leave unprepared students worried about their final grades. Luckily, the Georgia Tech Center for Academic Success is here to assist.
“You’ve got to finish the problem!” said Donald Pearl, director of the center.
As a former professor of physics and mathematics, Pearl understands the kinds of problems Georgia Tech students face. With 25 years of experience as a professor and academic administrator, Pearl has worked at numerous colleges and with many student success programs.
The Georgia Tech Center for Academic Success offers a variety of programs to help students achieve their academic goals; however, many students are unfamiliar with this campus resource.
“We’re not only here to help failing students,” Pearl said. “The Center for Academic Success can help a B student become an A student, too.”
The five main programs offered by the center are tutoring, academic coaching, workshops, Reboot, and the GT 2100 course. Each program has a unique goal to assist a unique type of student.
Tutoring
Tutoring is offered by successful undergraduate students who have received training provided by the Center for Academic Success. Anyone can register for tutoring in more than 100 courses, primarily 1000 and 2000 levels. If a tutor is not yet available for a given course, the Center for Academic Success offers a link to send a tutor request. Sign up for tutoring here.
Academic Coaching
Pearl describes Academic Coaching as something between advising and counseling. Coaches are academic professionals who are trained to help students with study techniques, time budgeting, and graduation tracking. Appointments typically last 30 minutes to an hour and are scheduled biweekly or monthly, and the coaches are able to work with a student’s availability. Sign up for coaching here.
GT 2100
The GT 2100 Seminar is designed to help students develop and practice strategies for success at Tech. This course is required for students returning from academic dismissal and voluntary for students who are on academic probation. Students enrolled in the course will learn new study skills, habits, and time management techniques.
Workshops
The Center for Academic Success offers various workshops, both online and in-person. They range in topics from time management and study strategies to exam preparation and goal setting. Students can register for workshops here. Upcoming workshops include a finals preparation workshop on April 12 and 20.
Reboot
Reboot for Academic Success is a program for students who are not meeting their academic expectations. It is a voluntary program that includes a weekly seminar-style group session and opportunities to work with Center for Academic Success staff. The next session of Reboot will be during the summer semester. Register here.
If you feel lost in your academic journey, the Center for Academic Success is ready to lead the way. The Center’s mission is to “provide exemplary academic support programs and services that enrich the learning experience of undergraduates within an engaging and welcoming environment.” Take advantage of its presence at Tech by stopping by Suite 283 on the second floor of the Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons.
